Small White - Wendy Dickson

This Small White is one of four found in a house at Baltasound over the last week, while caterpillars are also appearing there. They have all appeared since a batch of cabbages arrived from Yorkshire. Almost all, if not all, the confirmed Shetland records are in similar circumstances, although in at least one case, on Foula in the 1990s, they established themselves for a few years.

On the second day of the moth course, highlights were Shetland's second Snout at Sandwick, fifth Gold Spangle at Tresta along with 10 Dotted Clays and a Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, and 2 Straw Dots and 2 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwings at South Whiteness.

A Convolvulus Hawk-moth was trapped at Voehead on Bressay.

Evergestis extimalis and Phycitodes binaevella at Eswick and Exile at Tresta - Wendy Dickson

The first day of the SBRC moth course was on Saturday 11th, with traps set on the 10th emptied. The highlight was Shetland's first specimen of the pyralid Evergestis extimalis. Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing and the totrid  Aethes cnicana were the highlights at South Whiteness, while a Setaceous Hebrew Character was caught at Burrafirth, 10 Dotted Clays at Tresta, a Great Brocade at Virkie and a Bedstraw Hawk-moth at Maywick.

A specimen of Phycitodes binaevella caught at Eswick last week is also new for Shetland.

Blowfly (bluebottle) and the hoverflies Eristalis intricarius and E. arbustorum at Baltasound - Mike Pennington

In the bright sunshine there were plenty of hoverflies at Baltasound - Eristalis intricarius, Eristalis arbustorum and Helophilus pendulus were the commonest, with singles specimens of Eristalis pertinax, Platycheirus albimanus and Platycheirus manicatus.

Single specimens of Red Admiral and Large White were at Baltasound.

Another exceptionally early Shetland Bumblebee, this time in flight, was seen on the Bressay shoreline opposite Noss, and another lethargic individual  was found in a welly on Noss.
